The Rheumatologist

So I met the rheumatologist today.  She is definitely a good doctor on first impressions, she’s Latina, from Puerto Rico; and is pure spitfire!  I’m going for a round of X-Rays, Lab Work, and I need to have a Sleep Study done.  She agrees 100% that I do indeed have Fibro, though Dr. V. is not fully convinced that I do indeed have Lupus; but she is going to investigate that with some of the lab work.

The Fibro.

In her physical exam, she confirmed the fibromyalgia, I have 16 of the 18 trigger points.  She is also very concerned with the swelling in my legs which she said may be related to the gabapentin I’m taking, though she’s not fully sure because it could belong to some of my other issues.  She’s adjusted my gabapentin to two 300mg pills either at bedtime or 1 twice a day (I currently take 1 pill three times a day), plus she’s added Cymbalta 60mg twice a day (since the mail order pharmacy covers it with my insurance and not the retail pharmacy {funny how that works}).   She also gave me a Trodal injection to help with the inflammation I’m currently experiencing.

The Lupus.
As I said in the brief intro Dr. V. isn’t very convinced that I do indeed have Lupus, she thinks a neurologist just slapped that diagnosis on me without in-depth testing.  I do have some of the symptoms of Lupus so she is not fully ruling that out until the lab work comes in.

The Sleep Study & Restless Leg Syndrome.
I had a sleep study done a four years ago which at that time revealed that I didn’t have Chronic Sleep Apnea (CSA), but that I had Restless Leg Syndrome, and I grind my jaw.  She believes I do have CSA.  During her physical exam, she said I have a small mouth and small trachea which is a big indication of CSA.  In regards to my Restless Leg Syndrom, she also is doing a steady increase in my ReQuip from 0.25mg up to 1.00mg; I will start at 0.50mg and steadily increase over a few days until I’m at 1mg.

Psoriatic Arthritis
She’s sending me for X-Rays of my hands.  I’m also on a regimen of Prednisone for a flare-up of the Psoriasis, she is also exploring a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

To sum it up it was a very eventful and informative visit with a doctor I hope to have in my corner for a very long time!

Just a reminder all links open in a new window and I encourage you to explore them for the information they offer!

  2. Padre Tatro! What good news & a fully excellent report on the improved watchful care of your health by your new “Dr. V”!!! And the Doctor is, as Horty was sure to note, a Latina from Puerto Rico!!! From all you said, she is a pro-active, energized professional really looking out for you!!! So happy for you! You sound upbeat about your visit & the results! So the Fibro confirmed & adjusted meds. Lupus not dismissed without further testing. And then the CSA sounds like you will have another Sleep Study. Restless Leg confirmed by her. And then treatment for Psoriatic Arthritis & checking on Rheumatoid Arthritis. WOW!!! Doctor V is quite something! You have found your health advocate! Happy for you, Padre!!! Phil
